Gummy smile treatment
A Gummy Smile is when some people smile and the upper lip lifts too far above their upper teeth, this exposes their gums and gives an unattractive smile. This could be due to a hyperactive muscle which elevates the upper lip. The gummy smile can also be affected by a thinning upper lip that further contributes to the problem by exposing the upper gum even more.
Reconstructive dental work that may have been done to straighten teeth can cause the upper jaw to move forward, resulting in showing too much gum when smiling. Fortunately, gummy smiles can be effectively corrected by Botulinum toxin (well known as Botox) injections to reduce the activity of the muscle that elevates the upper lip. A dermal filler can also help to contour the lip and bring back a more symmetrical smile. We may do both procedures in the one sitting depending on each patient’s needs.
